According to GlobalIndustryAnalysts Inc. (GIA), the global plastic film and board market consumption is expected to reach 50.7 million tons in 2015. Among them, plastic film and sheet in the Asia-Pacific region are expected to become the fastest growing regional market. The GIA, based in San Jose, Calif., said the growth will be "driven by the huge potential of the Chinese and Indian markets." The economies of these countries are growing rapidly, and the per capita consumption of plastic films and sheets is currently low. The GIA forecasts that Africa/Middle East, Latin America and Eastern Europe will also see growth in the future. GIA added: "The prosperity of the Russian market is driving the demand for plastic film in the region." In terms of polymer types, GIA said that polyethylene plastic film will be the world's most demanding market segment. However, with the increasing penetration of polypropylene into existing polyethylene applications, the market share of polyethylene is losing. In the polyethylene family, the market share of low density polyethylene (LDPE) is flowing to linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE). The market for high density polyethylene (HDPE) films is also growing steadily, albeit at a slower rate than linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE). In terms of sales volume, biaxially oriented polypropylene plastic film is the fastest growing segment. After experiencing a recession in 2008, the BOPP market quickly recovered in 2009, with an increase of 3-4%. According to GIA, global BOPP plastic film production capacity is expected to increase by 2.2 million tons to 2.4 million tons in 2010-2013, most of which is from the Middle East.
