According to a forecast by Global Industry Analysts Inc. (GIA), global consumption of plastic films and sheets is expected to reach 50.7 million tons in 2015. Among them, the Asia-Pacific region is expected to become the fastest-growing regional market for plastic films and sheets. GIA, headquartered in San Jose, California, USA, states that this growth will be "driven by the enormous potential of the Chinese and Indian markets," where rapid economic development is occurring, and per capita consumption of plastic films and sheets is currently low. GIA predicts that Africa/Middle East, Latin America, and Eastern Europe will also show growth in the future. GIA also added, "The thriving Russian market is driving the continuous growth of demand for plastic films in the region." In terms of polymer types, GIA states that polyethylene plastic films will be the largest segment of global demand. However, as polypropylene increasingly penetrates existing polyethylene applications, polyethylene's market share is declining. Within the polyethylene family, the market share of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) is shifting towards linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE). The high-density polyethylene (HDPE) film market is also steadily growing, but at a slower rate than linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE). In terms of sales volume, biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) plastic films are the fastest-growing segment. After experiencing a recession in 2008, the BOPP market quickly recovered in 2009, with an increase of 3-4%. GIA states that from 2010 to 2013, global BOPP plastic film production capacity is expected to grow by 2.2 million tons, reaching 2.4 million tons, with most of the capacity expansion coming from the Middle East.
