The Asia-Pacific region drives the growth of plastic film and sheet materials.

According to a forecast by Global Industry Analysts Inc. (GIA), global consumption of plastic films and sheets is expected to reach 50.7 million tons by 2015. Among these, the Asia-Pacific region is expected to become the fastest-growing regional market, with a compound annual growth rate of 4.0% from now until 2015. GIA, based in San Jose, California, USA, states that this growth will be "driven by the enormous potential of the Chinese and Indian markets," where the economies are rapidly developing, and the per capita consumption of films and sheets is currently low. The markets in North America, Japan, and Western Europe are already mature and saturated. GIA predicts that Africa/Middle East, Latin America, and Eastern Europe will also show growth in the future. GIA adds, "The thriving Russian market is driving the continuous growth in demand for plastic films in the region." In terms of polymer types, GIA states that polyethylene films will be the largest segment of global demand. However, as polypropylene increasingly penetrates existing polyethylene applications, polyethylene's market share is declining. Within the polyethylene family, the market share of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) is shifting towards linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE). The high-density polyethylene (HDPE) film market is also steadily growing, although at a slower rate than linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE). In terms of sales volume, biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) films are the fastest-growing segment. After experiencing a recession in 2008, the BOPP market quickly recovered in 2009, with an increase of 3-4%. GIA states that from 2010 to 2013, global BOPP capacity is expected to grow by 2.2 million tons, reaching 2.4 million tons, with most of the capacity expansion coming from the Middle East.
